When I joined Penton just over 18 months ago, the question that I was asked most often was: “What are you going to do with the Design Engineering media portfolio at the company?” At that time, the group was described both internally and externally as a “tertiary player,” “solid but unspectacular,” and “in need of an overhaul.”

However, I quickly learned that the Penton Design Engineering business was larger and more profitable than its competitors (many of whom were being sold) and the people here were as passionate, creative, and focused as any team that I had worked with. In turn, as many of our partners know, the database of Penton readers is the most responsive I have ever worked with in my career.

With this foundation, we got to work crafting new positions, re-investing in products that sorely needed attention, and spending a great deal of time listening to our readers and our marketing partners. We began a journey 18 months ago to become the premier independent information source for electronics engineers, mechanical engineers, and procurement professionals in the industry. We decided to engage with new, younger engineers as well as ensuring that we continued to serve the needs of the experienced engineer and manager. As we move forward, we are committed to connecting experienced engineers in a mentoring role with new engineers entering the profession.

It is fair to say that in 18 months we have come a long way, but we are only just getting started. In the next few months we will migrate our entire set of digital products to a new, state-of-the-art platform that will provide readers and advertisers with new ways to engage with cutting-edge content and provide solutions to design professionals. We have a number of exciting products that we will be launching over the coming weeks, as we strongly believe that the industry needs a vibrant and strong independent media source.

All of this adds to some significant momentum for the Design Engineering business here at Penton (now Informa). I would like to sincerely thank our loyal customers and those that have recently partnered with us. We have started 2017 over 30% ahead of where we were at this point last year and that has enabled us to re-invest in the exciting new product developments that we will bring to the industry this year.

It is an exciting time to be part of the ever-changing design engineering industry; 2017 is a year of momentum–come and join us on the journey!
